Homework
Policy
2011-2012
Dear Families,
This letter is in reference to HOMEWORK! In first grade, we establish habits that can help or hinder us as the years go by. Your child will have homework each night except for weekends.
Homework serves a four-fold purpose:
1. It provides extra practice of a specific skill that has been taught at
school.
2. It gives parents insight into how their child approaches and completes
assignments.
3. It teaches responsibility.
4. It ties home and school together.
Your child will bring home their Take Home Folder each and every day. On the inside, the left side is labeled Keep At Home. This side is for all teacher notes (that does NOT need a parent signature), flyers, completed assignments, tests or other projects that may stay at home forever. The inside right side is labeledReturn to School. This side is for all homework assignments, flyers, teacher notes (that DOES need a parent signature), projects or missed classwork that needs to be turned into the teacher or school. Homework that needs to be completed will be placed in the Return to School side. Once your child has completed their homework it should be placed back in the Return to School side of the folder and turned in at school. Homework must always stay in the Return to School side so it does not get lost between other papers or in their backpack.
In general your child will receive homework 4 days a week with the exception of some early release days and days off during the week. I understand many students are very busy outside of school and they may not be able to complete all of their homework in one night. When it comes to turning in daily homework they may either turn it in as completed each night, or turn in all homework on Friday (unless there is a posted due date for projects or other time sensitive
assignments).
Homework will include spelling, math and reading. From time to time projects will be sent home that need to be completed at home.
Please supervise your child when completing his/her homework. Homework will be checked for completion only. Completing homework should not be a cause of anxiety or stress for you or your child. If you find it to be difficult for your child, please contact me as soon as possible.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me via phone, email or a note. Email is the quickest way to get in touch with me.
Homework Schedule
This will be our homework schedule for the year. Your child will have homework in the following subject areas. No homework will be given on Fridays.
Spelling: Monday-Thursday
Students will be expected to complete one creative spelling activity at home, Monday thru Thursday. Ideas for creative spelling activities are attached. Spelling homework does NOT need to be turned in.
Math: Monday-Thursday
Deer Valley has recently become a S.T.E.M. School with the emphasis on math. It is very important that your child is
completing their math homework to ensure that we are maximizing our learning potential in class. Math homework will be given Monday thru Thursday and unit tests will be administered when the unit is completed. Test days will vary due to the length of the unit. Homework may be turned in as completed throughout the week, or all turned in on Friday.
Reading: Monday-Thursday
Reading at Home:
Please have your child read at least 10-15 minutes each night. Please initial your child’s planner so I know they have read. I will check planners on Friday for parent signatures. They may choose a book of their choice when reading at home. This book should be easy for them to read. If they are struggling with more than four words in a sentence that book may be too difficult. This should be an enjoyable experience for them. Students will have a reading comprehension
test every Friday. This will cover the story we read in class together. We will be reviewing the story and sight words all week long. Each week I will post a
copy of the story we read in class on our class website. This copy will be typed without the pictures. Please read the story and go over the sight words each
week with your child.
Thank you,
Mrs. Mans
